Search methods

The database of Szczecin schools’ students can be browsed via simple search - by entering the student's surname, first name or place of origin in the search bar - or via complex search, combining several search criteria. It is possible to search the records of all three facilities at the same time or each of them separately.
Another possibility of obtaining information on the composition of the school is provided by chronological criteria associated with the names of rectors who oversaw recruitment at a given time. Clicking on a specific range will bring up a list of students accepted to the school by the indicated rector or their deputies (items marked vacancy).

Rules for editing data

The record describing a particular student consists mainly of information extracted directly from the register and other documents; first name, surname, name of hometown and date of recruitment are included. In addition, the current official name of the place of origin and standardized forms of first names and surnames have been added. The remarks field takes into account later additions made to the name of a particular student in the register, as well as any other information clarifying or correcting their personal details. Records concerning students from years 1576-1666 and 1679-1805 have been linked to a scan of the page of the register from which the data was extracted. In addition, each record is affixed with an individual student number, consisting of the year of recruitment and the listing position in the register (e.g. 1588/9) or other source document (e.g. A1562/5) - the use of this arrangement will facilitate potential citation and use of the original register and its book edition. If a particular student appeared more than once in the sources, then references to subsequent numbers have been added in the notes field (cf. e.g. A1575/18 and 1576/7).

The data presented here for the students of Ducal Pedagogium, Carolingian Gymnasium and Academic Gymnasium in Szczecin was acquired from documents written in Latin and German. In accordance with the principles accepted for the publication of modern historical sources, Latin spellings have been humanised and German spellings - modernised. Names and place names written in abbreviated form in the documents have been resolved in undisputed cases (without the use of square brackets for search reasons), while in places where there was doubt as to their unique and definite wording, they have been retained in their source form.

The source base for the database is a manuscripts belonging to the collection of the Pomeranian Library in Szczecin and stored under the reference Rkps 250/1-2: Album studiosorum Gymnasii Regii Stetinensis and Album studiosorum Illustris Paedagogii Stetinensis. Data from outside the register, which supplemented information about the student body in years 1544-1575 and 1667-1678, was obtained from the so-called foundation act of the Ducal Pedagogium in Szczecin (State Archive in Szczecin, Archives of the Dukes of Szczecin, signature I/1915) and from the account books of the Marian Foundation (National Archive in Szczecin, NMP Foundation, signatures 995–1024, 1124–1140).
